Why mobile?
Why does a console veteran want to make mobile games? In recent years, console games have been adding more and more microtransactions as part of their business models and trending towards games as a service. Meanwhile mobile games have moved from shorter MVPs towards large budget projects in a bid to break the highly competitive top 50. Ultimately, I foresee these two side of our industry converging somewhere in the middle. I have had great conversations with mobile game developers, consumed hours upon hours of mobile conference materials, attended GDC sessions, read in-depth analysis of trending games, and generally tried to become a student of what mobile games can teach console game development. While at Activision, I was unsuccessful in promoting these learnings towards our projects. Skylanders Imaginators did introduce a form of loot crate, but the implementation, while exceeding expectations, was rudimentary and was not integrated into the core experience. I feel that by joining a development team from the mobile side, not only can I put my academic knowledge of mobile games to practice, but I can help mobile games bring AAAA quality to their products and get our industry closer to this convergence point. Furthermore, working with a top 50 developer will provide access to learning from the best in the industry. I realize that there is still so much to learn from mobile games so it is my hope to help bring the console and mobile sides of our industry closer together for the betterment of all video games.
